BONE HEALTH

The human skeletal system is a complex organ in constant equilibrium with the rest of the body. In addition to the support and structure of the body, bone is the major reservoir for many minerals and other compounds essential for maintaining a healthy acid-base balance. The deterioration of the bone structure affects the elderly and most particularly women, who seem to be more susceptible to poor bone health starting at menopause. Issues such as osteopenia and osteoporosis, characterized by the weakening of the bone structure, can lead to bone fractures and other health problems that can be debilitating and life-altering.

AVOID DRUGS

Osteoporosis Drugs Are Dangerous! Osteoporosis drugs like Fosamax, Bonita, Actonel, and others are called bisphosphonates. They do not cure osteoporosis, they do not build strong bones, and you can't take them for long because of their side effects. Side Effects of Bisphosphonate Drugs: 1. Spontaneous fracture of femur (hip bone) 2. Indigestion 3. Long-term weakening of bone structure 4. Necrosis (rotting) of mandible (jaw bone), this is irreversible. 5. Increased risk for Barrett's esophagus (erosion of the lining of esophagus), if you have history of acid reflux or GERD What is the advantage of taking these drugs (besides drug company's profit)? You get a few years of less bone loss showing on tests because your skeleton fails to clear old, dying and brittle bones; this actually causes a weakening of your bones rather than making them stronger. In another words, the drugs mask symptoms, giving you the illusion that things are under control when they are not. Stop Taking Antacids! Taking antacids for many years for GERD, indigestion or heartburn is a fast track to osteoporosis. These drugs, from the very first pill reduce stomach acid, which you need for proper digestion and absorption of the very nutrients your bones need to stay strong, calcium being the main one. Heartburn and GERD is actually a symptom of insufficient stomach acid. If you have these problems, instead of taking drugs to stop acid, you need supplemental digestive aids and enzymes. The antacid drugs mask the symptoms, but do not treat the cause.

FOOD FOR HEALTHY BONES

Slow-cooker Beef-Bone Stew

Ingredients:

2-4 lbs beef meat with bones (People's Pharmacy and Wheatsville - available in the frozen section) or 2 pounds beef stew meat

2-3 carrots chopped in large chunks

1 large onion cut in big chunks or 10 small boiler onions

2-3 celery chopped

1/2 bunch Parsley chopped

Garlic diced or powder - to taste

Salt and pepper

1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar

About 1 quart water

Preparation:

Place meat (with the bones) in a large crock-pot, add boiling water until it covers the meat, add vinegar and cook for about 3-5 hours or until meat is tender and coming off the bones. Add carrots, celery, onions, garlic and salt. Add more water if needed. Cook another 1-2 hours or until vegetables are tender. The meat should have come off the bones, you may take the bones out or leave them in. Turn off the crock-pot. Season with more salt and pepper to taste, add parsley. Enjoy! Save leftovers or freeze for later.

STRONG BONES

The solution to strengthen your bones involves: 1. Weight-bearing exercises - you must put strong weight-bearing stress on your bones, like lifting weights every 5-6 days. The best, safest, easiest way to lift weights is to join a gym and use the the Slow Burn Fitness Revolution by Hahn, Eades, and Eades. 2. Adequate Nutrition - You need to eat foods rich in protein and essential fatty acids, plenty of healthy fats, and vegetables high in minerals and vitamins. 3. Nutritional support - This is not an osteoporosis pill you buy on sale at Costco. Calcium and other bone supporting supplements like fish oil, vitamin D and vitamin C all need to be from trusted sources and have real food-source bone concentrate, real minerals, and real vitamins, not just synthetic or partial vitamins. COD LIVER OIL

(with Vitamin D)

This is high quality, pure cod liver oil that's a super source of vitamin D that has been kept intact in its natural state. This product comes in capsule form. A word of caution: when buying fish oil, be aware that the quality varies greatly. Most fish oils you find at health food stores are rancid from being industrially processed with high heat (400 degrees) that damages its properties. Some also come from contaminated fish sources.

CATAPLEX C

Real vitamin C from carrots, buckwheat, alfafa, mushrooms, echinacea and more. It includes all the ancillary nutrition that makes up a whole vitamin: bioflavonoids, enzymes, coenzymes, copper, etc. This is not synthetic ascorbic acid that is made in a chemistry laboratory.

CALCIUM LACTATE

Why take two kinds of calcium? Calcium Lactate is the most easily assimilated form of calcium. This kind of calcium supplies your tissues and muscles with the calcium needed for everyday functions so that your body does not take calcium out of your bones. Some side benefits are that it helps with muscle cramps, protects skin from sunburn and supports the immune system.

A Note From Elizabete

Bone health is personal to me. My mother has severe osteoporosis and I see how debilitating and painful it can be. Having small bones I know I'm at risk for bone loss.
